Every year, young people looking for government jobs are cheated through fake websites, forged appointment letters and promises of jobs through “setting”. Here is how to identify a fake recruitment and protect yourself.
The Most Important Rule
Government jobs are never sold. In a genuine recruitment you pay only the application fee stated in the notification, online. If any person, agent or “officer” asks for money to guarantee a job, it is a fraud.
Common Signs of a Fake Recruitment
- The website address is not on .gov.in or .nic.in, but on a look-alike .com/.org/.in domain.
- A promise of “direct appointment” without any exam or interview.
- Asking for money as a “security deposit”, “training fee” or “verification charge”.
- An appointment letter received on WhatsApp/Telegram with odd language or spelling mistakes.
- An “offer letter” sent from a personal Gmail/Yahoo address.
- Pressure to pay quickly — “pay today or you will lose your seat”.
How to Check if a Recruitment is Genuine
- Look for the recruitment on the official website of the department or commission — for example SSC: ssc.gov.in, Railway Recruitment Boards: rrb.indianrailways.gov.in, UPSC: upsc.gov.in.
- Check the weekly Employment News published by the Government of India.
- If you receive an appointment letter, confirm it directly with the department’s official phone/email — not the number printed on the letter.
- Official channels such as PIB Fact Check regularly issue alerts about fake recruitments.
What to Do if You Have Been Cheated
- Report cyber fraud immediately on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline 1930.
- Keep screenshots of payments, chats, call details and bank transaction IDs.
- File a written complaint at your nearest police station.
- Inform your bank immediately so the transaction can be stopped if possible.
