Age limits and age relaxation are among the most confusing parts of a government job form. This guide explains the general age relaxation rules followed in central government recruitments (SSC, Railways, Banks, UPSC and others).
How Age Relaxation Works
Every recruitment has a minimum and maximum age, calculated on a fixed cut-off date — for example “as on 1 January 2027”. Reserved categories get relaxation in the upper age limit, not the minimum age.
General Age Relaxation in Central Government Jobs
| Category | Relaxation in Upper Age Limit |
|---|---|
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years |
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| PwBD – UR/EWS | 10 years |
| PwBD – OBC | 13 years |
| PwBD – SC/ST | 15 years |
| Ex-servicemen | 3 years after deducting military service (as per recruitment rules) |
Example: If the maximum age is 30 years, an OBC candidate can apply up to 33 years and an SC/ST candidate up to 35 years.
Is There Relaxation for EWS?
In central government recruitments, EWS candidates usually get no separate age relaxation; their age limit is the same as the general category. Some state governments do give EWS relaxation under their own rules.
State Government Jobs
State rules are different. In many states, age relaxation applies only to reserved candidates who are domiciled in that state; candidates from other states are treated as general category. Some states also give extra relaxation to women. Read the age table in the state notification carefully.
Points to Remember
- Age is counted from the date of birth recorded in your 10th class certificate / marksheet.
- OBC candidates need a valid non-creamy layer certificate, and for central jobs it must be in the central government format.
- If you qualify on more than one ground (for example OBC + PwBD), the combined rule given in the notification applies.
- The notification of each recruitment is final — the table above is general information.
